Bombay Cat

The Bombay cats brilliant gold or copper eyes accentuate the lustrous black coat while the fur is short and close-lying giving  the appearance of patent leather and because of this contrast it has often been called "the patent leather kid with the new penny eyes" It is named the Bombay after the Idian black leopard and it is nevertheless, an American breed. It was sucessfully born from the crossing o a sable brown Burmese and Black American Shorthair and while the breeding program started in 1958 it was only accepted for championship status in 1976 by the CFA.

Attributes of a Bombay Cat

The coat of the bombay cat is undoubtedly its most charming feature and eyes that range from gold to copper with darker colouration being more preferred, the body should be reminiscent of its Burmese ancestry - lithe and muscular and the head should be broad with the eys well spaced, rounded and with the neck narrow. Faults include a kink in the tail, curly hair, spots, green eyes and colouring other than black. This cat is content in a house or apartment and may never feel the need to go outside, as they are perfectly comfortable indoors however it does crave company so should not be left alone for too long. It is quiet, sensitive, affectionate, reserved with intelligence and soft-voiced. Its ears prick at the slightest sound and it seems to have a healthy aversion to loud noises.

Each litter generally has four to five kittens which start light coloured but then become totally black in their sixth month.
