Caesarean section in Cats

A Caesarean section or C-Section is the surgical delivery of a litter that is performed by a vetinary surgeon when it is discoved that normal birth is not going to happen. This can happen in a number of situations but the most common reasons are a kitten getting stuck or ineffective contractions of the womb called uterine inertia.

Speed is always going to be the order of the day with a caesarian section if the mother and the kitten are to be saved but it is usually effective. The cat is put under anaesthetic and an incision is made to the abdomenal wall and another directly to the womb  . The wounds are then sutured up and though the cat will need extra care and attention after the operation they are generally healthy enough to perform normal cat feeding and caring for the kittens.
