Allergic Reactions in Cats

Cats can and do suffer from allergic reactions from time to time from flea bites, insect bites, the wearing of flea collars or  even an injection. The area of the cause may become swollen, itchy and apinful and in some cases the face may swell. A cold compress may relieve the irrtation but qualified vets advice and attention is needed as an allergic reaction can sometimes be a precursor to anaphylaxis, which is a more severe form of alergic reaction. In humans this would cause swelling of the throat and mouth and make breathing especially difficult and needs immediate medical attention.

Indication of Cat Allergies

The most common  indications of cat allergy will be itchy skin, coughing or sneezing and vomit or diarrhea in the case of a food allergy. Allergies to food, fleas, something in the air such as pollen trees, grass and weeds along with moulds, dust and dust mites.

The most typical Cat Allergy are Flea allergies which are very common in cats. A normal cat may simply scratch the affected area and then go away to terrorize a ball of wool but a cat with an allergy will simply sit for hours and end up taking huge chunks of fur in its quest  to relieve itself.

Food Allergy in Cats

Just like humans, a real food allergy in a cat may e very difficult to track down, one reason for this is that they can commonly demonstrate many of the characteristics of distress seen in other types of allergy. Real food allergies can cause itching, swollen areas and breathing difficulties. Most food allergies center around protein commonly found in their diet such as meat like beef, lamb, poultry or pork yet simply removing that foodstuff will typically resolve the problem but it is best to get a trained veterinarian to confirm the problem so it does not reoccur.

Contact allergies in Cats

The most common type of allergy in cats is the contact of such things as bedding, flea collars or flea sprays and could even be its favourite toy, until you isolate the problem it can be hard to find the cause but your cat will love you for it, if only because you removed that pesky collar.
